Harken grease
Opening winch
Remove top screw
Lift off drum
Cleaning
Remove bearings from center stem
Remove allen screws holding center stem to base
Remove center stem carefully
Remove pawls and springs by catching spring with knife (see picture)
Hold spring against pawl and lift out pawl
Clean and check for wear
Remove all bearings, gear shafts and gears
Clean all parts with rags and solvent
Lubing
Use a brush to lubricate all gears, gear shafts, bearings, teeth and all moving parts lightly with grease
Lightly lubricate pawls using oil 3-in-1 oil (NOT GREASE)
Reassembly
Place spring against pawl with straight leg against pawl (see picture)
Hold spring closed and slip pawl into pawl socket
Reassemble pawl gear and ratchet gear on steel washer
Reassemble ratchet assembly over gear shaft
Reassemble bearings over washer on central stem
Replace drum and top screw
Spin and enjoy the sweet sound of a clean, lubricated ratchet!
Removing pawl spring - use knife to free captive spring
Insert straight leg against pawl. Use oil for lubrication.
Ratchet gear mounted backwards will cause winch to slip
